Local newsletters are exploding right now.. & if you live in a city with a 15,000 + population (or near one) you could take advantage.
I recently did a YouTube video explaining how i’m going to be growing and monetizing my own local newsletters. Check that out below if you’d like. (ill also recap the process).
Here’s the process:
Step 1: Evaluate Your City
Ensure your city or nearby cities have a population of at least 15,000–25,000 people.
Check for a good number of small businesses, restaurants, and service providers.
Look for regular events happening in your city, as more events mean more opportunities to promote.
Step 2: Initial Growth
Use subreddits specific to your city to promote your newsletter. Message moderators to ask for permission to mention it.
Use Facebook groups or pages dedicated to your city. Contact admins to see if you can share your newsletter there.
Step 3: Referral Growth
Contact 20 popular local spots and propose a win-win deal where you promote their business, and they offer a small discount (10–20%) to subscribers who refer at least one friend.
Basically when someone signs up you send them an automated email saying if they refer one friend they will get a list of 20 restaurant deals.
Word of mouth is the most powerful driver of growth for a local newsletter. (and it’s free).
Step 4: Content Creation
Create content like food reviews or local highlights through blogs, TikTok, or Instagram.
Include a call-to-action (CTA) for your newsletter in each piece of content.
Step 5: Facebook Ads
Create 5-6 different Facebook ads targeting your city and find the most effective one to run.
Combine Facebook ads with the free methods mentioned above.
Step 6: Monetization Methods
Ads and Sponsorships: Sell ad space or get sponsors from local businesses for your newsletter. Putting together a pamphlet describing what you do and your contact info and handing it to businesses could be a great idea.
Products and Merchandise: Sell branded merchandise, local guides, or ebooks. You can also sell exclusive products from local businesses.
Blog or YouTube Monetization: Use your growing subscriber base to monetize through ads on your blog or YouTube channel. Send traffic from your newsletter to your content for more exposure (which equals more $$).
